Winter Herbs that Heal
As the days and nights grow cooler it is time to gather Winter Herbs that Heal for those colds and flus.
The best cure as we know is prevention!
As we know a very popular herb for the winter months to treat colds and flu as it is well known for its use in immunity. It stimulates the immune system to mount a more effective response, facilitating the clearance of pathogens and quickening healing. It belongs to the daisy family which are a group of herbaceous flowering plants called – Asteraceae, so take note if you have known daisy allergies this one may not be for you.
Let’s get down to the serious part. It’s all in the roots!
Quality matters when it comes to Echinacea. The type and plant part are super important. There are many Echinacea products available which differ according to plant species (E. angustifolia, E.purpurea or E. pallida or combinations of these), plant part (root, leaves or seeds or combination of these), and quality markers (alkylamides, polysaccharides or caffeic acid parts).
Recent research shows that the alkylamides, the unique characteristic phytochemicals are found mostly in the roots of Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea and have been shown to be the best choice as markers of immune activity. So next time you are searching for quality Echinacea make sure it has the ones mentioned otherwise you may not get just what you need.
When it comes to herbs you get what you pay for. Go for the best. In a tincture (a prescribed liquid herb by a practitioner), produces a tingle on the tongue when you taste it. It sure does – Ask me for a taste next time you are in. Why not protect and maintain your immunity – take immune boosting herbs before the Winter Blues hit home.

Garlic is renowned as being one of the earliest traditional documented herbs. The antimicrobial properties were first confirmed by Louis Pasteur in 1958. Garlic contains a variety of compounds including alliin, allinase, amino acids, fibre, lipids and vitamins and minerals. Garlics antibacterial action has been demonstrated in numerous studies. Have it raw or encapsulated for its best benefit. With the rise in antimicrobial resistance maybe we all need to get a little more garlic!

Much change has occurred for my partner and I this year, how about you? With an exciting venture to lecture in Brisbane and also on the Sunshine Coast my partner and I recently moved. For practicality reasons we moved closer to Brisbane (we are only an hour away). Currently I am teaching Herbal Medicine and Naturopathic Philosophy to the next generation of Naturopaths and Herbalists. This is something I always wanted to do!
I am still consulting on the Sunshine Coast – once or twice a month, in Newcastle every 3-4 months, the Gold Coast on demand when needed and of course online via skype or Phone and in our home at Margate.
At present I have clients in Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Brisbane so don’t hesitate to forward my details on. I am passionate about educating and helping others heal and transform their health.
Due to rising modern day costs and I’m sure you understand these, my consultations have now increased. It has been sometime since I have done this. See my website for further details www.gaininghealthnaturally.com
